Academic Update – 6th July 2018

“Feedback is the breakfast of champions!” – Ken Blanchard
We hope that your son (s) / daughter (s) were successful in their end of year exams. As exam papers are gradually returned to them, we would strongly advise that you ask to see marked papers and respond to the feedback they’re given. It is always a good time to set some subject specific targets, identifying two or three key areas per subject in terms of skills or content where the students can improve and closing any gaps. They can use the previous revision materials or our digital services, like SAM Learning, to close those gaps.

Subject handbooks for GCSE and A Level
Course handbooks for all GCSE and A Level courses are available on the Academy website in the ‘Teaching and Learning’ section. These handbooks will include a curriculum overview of teaching across the course, details of assessment requirements, links to useful resources and course expectations. They will serve as a point of reference for students, as well as a useful resource for parents who would like to use the information to support their son / daughter. These are really useful for students to prepare for their learning in the next academic year.

Reading lists and resources to support students’ learning
We have reading lists for all subjects in Key Stages 3 and 4. Reading lists for Key Stage 5 will be available in the handbooks mentioned above. Using this list of reading materials and resources will not only consolidate students’ understanding of the curriculum, but also deepen their background knowledge about subjects.

Please click here to view the full list.

Other resources available to students in the LRC:

Access to Philip Allan A-level magazine archive for most subjects including Biology, Business, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, Modern History, PE, Physics, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies and Sociology.

Key Stage 3 Certificate Graduation
Students in Year 8 will be our first cohort to graduate formally from the new KS3 3Cert Curriculum. As a result, we will be holding a graduation for them during P5 on Wednesday 18th July. They will receive a final certificate of achievement with all of their grades detailed from their subjects. This does mean that you will not receive a progress check until this date. We will also be making available their I Can Statement achievements, available to read online in due course.

Changes: we want to hear from you!
We are looking at what you might want to see on progress checks when we send them home. We are changing the SELF Learner Strength and Learner Action to information on Behaviour, Effort and IL. We are also changing independent learning tools from Show My Homework to Smart Homework. It has the same functionality as Show My Homework, but is a free resource. If you have any feelings towards these two items that you would like us to take into consideration, please email me on I will be arranging a parents forum in due course to discuss these changes, should you be interested.

Acting Vice Principal – Curriculum
